Where They Stood
See just how many royal palms have been
removed to-date. Courtesy of satellite

created a bird's eye view of the devastation.
City Ordinance Requires Royals
"Biscayne Boulevard...shall be so designed,
improved and located...using royal palms and
other types of tropical plants suitable to its
gateway role."
Historic Biscayne Boulevard
Known worldwide for its beautiful palms, it
was intended to play the role of tropical
gateway to Miami. For 80 years it has stood
as a living memorial to our city's veterans.

A Royal Shame - The Florida Department of Transportation is currently involved in
an overhaul of Biscayne Boulevard. Their plan includes removal of the stately royal
palms which have flanked the boulevard for decades. Restore her historic landscape!
Chainsaws on Biscayne Blvd.
With 133 palms already pulled out (and
dying on a causeway in Biscayne Bay),
chainsaws came for more. City says "Hault!"
Other Cities' Tropical Gateways
Other Florida cities have restored their gateway
boulevards. Two local examples are Arthur
Godfrey Road in Miami Beach and Kane
Concourse in Bay Harbor.
Concrete Pole with Fronds?
Does this look like a telephone pole to you?
The project designers think so. Read this
two-page document summarizing royal palms
as unwanted and "out-of-scale".
"It's not about palms versus shade, it's about preserving
South Florida's rich history and sub-tropical landscape"
SavePalms
working to save the boulevard palms
Save our Boulevard Palms
We are seeking historic status for this
City acknowledged Miami landmark, our
gateway, Biscayne Boulevard.
SavePalms is a collaborative effort of citizens
and local boulevard businesses striving for
the preservation of Biscayne Boulevard's
decades-old, historic landscape. Our goal is to
bring forth the voice of those supporting
historic preservation - to those who can act on
Miami's City Ordinance which dictates the
design of Biscayne Boulevard.
Through public awareness, we attempt to stop
the continued removal of the hundreds of
royal palms remaining and preserve Biscayne
Boulevard's historic, palm-lined gateway
status for generations to come - as "Scenic
Transportation Corridor".

Why save the Biscayne Boulevard palms?
Where did they go? What's to come? Are we
acting in the best interest for our past and our
future or on someone's whim for shade?
