Royals to Return to Upper Eastside!
Today it was announced in the Miami Herald that 100 royal palms will return to Biscayne Boulevard through the Upper
Eastside!  Read about it in today's Herald (attached).  Up until two weeks ago, the majestic royals which have lined
Biscayne Boulevard for decades were not to be incorporated in the "new" landscape plan; in fact, we were to expect
83 less trees than had been taken down. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/opinion/16719106.htm

Congratulations to All
Lots of activity in recent weeks lead to this decision.  Most recently, Commissioner Sarnoff met with FDOT to ensure
that at the very least, 100 royals will be replanted and incorporated into the new landscape. At the two recent FDOT
public hearings, many of you voiced your concerns over the loss of the palms.  Last week a few of us (including
community activists, Elvis Cruz and Teri D'Amico) celebrated Biscayne Boulevard's 80th birthday by handing out
cupcakes, water and SavePalms fliers at 69th Street and Biscayne Boulevard--which got caught the attention of
several newspapers including coverage in the Miami Herald (also attached).

This victory is due largely in part by the great interest Commissioner Sarnoff took in the palms (for which we are
deeply grateful) and also because of the support each and everyone of you has demonstrated in saving the palms.
Now we look forward to seeing FDOT's modified landscape plan incoporating the royal palms and focusing our efforts
to saving the stately royal palms from downtown north to 36th Street, many of which are also slated for removal.

Congratulations and thank you for your support,

Sean-Paul Melito
