Long Awaited Landscape Meetings Planned!
Florida Department of Transportation will be hosting two meetings in the near future.  Mark you calendars for the first
week of December and the first week of January 2007.  This is the moment we've been waiting for.  Please attend this
meeting - those opposing the return of the Biscayne Boulevard's historic landscape will be out in force.  You can be
added to the notification list by
e-mailing Herbert Ammons.

Commissioner Run-off:  Who will Support Historic Designation of Boulevard Landscape?
Interim Commissioner Haskins has reviewed SavePalms' petition for historic designation/preservation of Biscayne
Boulevard's historic landscape.  A response from Mr. Sarnoff, run-off candidate for Commissioner is also pending.

Biscayne Boulevard Celebrates 80th Anniversary
On Veterans's Day, 1926, Mayor Romfh and City Manager Frank H. Wharton planted the last of the royal palms that
were to become Biscayne Boulevard's trademark.  The thoroughfare was then dedicated to veterans of all wars.  That
was the official birthday of Biscayne Boulevard.  80-years later, we are hopeful of the landscape's protection by
designating the boulevard as "Scenic Transportation Cooridor".

October 16 FDOT Construction Meeting Recap
Herbert Ammons, Public Information Specialist for the Biscayne Boulevard Reconstruction Project hosted a
community meeting to discuss the next phase of the reconstruction project.  Mr. Ammons informed the group that all
participating county and city agencies invited (FPL, Lighting, Sewer, etc.) had not shown up.  Eric Silverman of the
Vagabond Motel requested  that the MiMo District plan include decorative lighting and signs complimentary to its
newly recognized historic designation.  On the same note, SavePalms inquired about landscape preservation.  Mr.
Ammons and Mr. Treece of the Upper Eastside Miami Council responded by saying that input had been gathered and
that plans would not be changed.  Frank Rollason, candidate for Commissioner cited NE 13th and NE 15th Streets
(where as head of the Omni Community Redevelopment Agency, he helped change plans mid-construction to
accommodate decorative lighting around the new Carnival Center) in support of the idea that nothing is set in stone
until it's installed.  The NE 67th - NE 78th Street project has been delayed until April 2007.

All Boulevard Palms in Jeopardy of Removal
SavePalms has been informed that all royal palms along the entire stretch of Biscayne Boulevard are in jeopardy.  In
the name of Miami Mayor Diaz' "Canopy Campaign" Miamians are poised to lose the beautiful tropical gateway
landscape of Biscayne Boulevard for the sake of planting sapling shade trees.  For 20 to 30 years, we will wait for the
much promised shade.  At that point, a hurricane may leave many shade trees disfigured.  SavePalms will be
reaching out to all boulevard businesses in support of landscape preservation.  If you have contacts for boulevard
business owners/operations,
please let us know.
